Weekend Link Roundup
Posted: 03/19/2011
Happy weekend! Let’s start it off with some great 3D artwork from Victor Hugo Queiroz, featuring one of our personal favorites, Poison from Final Fight. You know, we should really do something with Poison… and Roxy.
Did you know that Superbrothers Sword & Sworcery EP is coming out (*fingers crossed*) for the iPad this week? Lowly iPhone users like me will have to wait a bit longer, but to ratchet up the hype, take a look at creator Craig D. Adams early video work, Children of the Clone.
And when you’re done watching that, did you catch Indie Mario?
Or this great Fez gameplay from PAX East?
Finally, if you’re in the LA are and want to get your hands on a Nintendo 3DS early, look for these pods in Santa Monica.
If you’re not already doing so, follow us on Twitter (and be our Facebook pals!).

Posted: 03/12/2011Let’s remember this week for the good stuff, like the first footage of one of our most beloved Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 contestants, the Lord of Chaos… He Who Sleeps, but Shall Awake… the mighty Shuma Gorath! Gotta say, I was a little concerned about Mr. Gorath’s transition from beautifully animated 2D to 3D, but after seeing him and Jill in action, no more worries.
On the bad news front, it appears that panty-filled shooter Gal Gun–one of my lowlights from TGS 2010–is losing some ogling features.
Who’s doing lunch better? Anna the Red, with her amazing Okami-inspired bento creation or Wendy’s who are crapping out some Pac-Man kid’s meals. Sure, I’m poo-pooing it, but I’m actually kind of interest in these Pac-Man trinkets. Someone, please stop me before I eat a Wendy’s junior sized lunch!

From the You Can’t Have This department, be jealous of these great, one-of-a-kind Mortal Kombat kab… err, cabinets, the grand prize of an upcoming UK tournament. They should really give another one of these at this year’s EVO tourney.
Finally, we’re obviously saddened to hear about this week’s massive quake and tsunami affecting Japan. We’re staying positive, knowing that some of our Tokyo and Osaka-based friends are safe and that the tragedy is bringing out the best in some people.

Scenes From Game Over 4 At Giant Robot
Posted: 03/06/2011
The annual Game Over art show hit Giant Robot this weekend, an event that drew hundreds of video game art-loving fans to the wee San Francisco store. We were there, offering first dibs on the big, bright and beautiful Fight Night posters (still coming soon to the online store!) and hangin’ with all the GDC stragglers. You still have time to make the show, which runs until March 30 at GRSF.

Jude Buffum’s great 8-bit terrariums where there and being snatched up like nobody’s business. Sadly, one of the pieces I wanted to buy, Kinuko’s “Slimes,” was already spoken for by the time I arrived. T_T

This beautiful piece, a tribute to rhythm games that included Taiko no Tatsujin, Dance Dance Revolution, Parappa the Rapper, Pop’n Music and more, looked dazzling on its lightbox.

People love to look at video game art. The proof!

GRSF couldn’t handle the crowds, so lovers of fine art were forced to spill out onto the streets.

Hey, look! It’s Nathan from Capy, Danny from Babycastles and Cory of being Cory Schmitz fame! They’re brown baggin’ it in indie fashion.

Here’s a photo of Cory’s piece from GO4. R.I.P. Saturn.

Oh, this may look like Skulls of the Shogun developer Jake Kazdal assaulting writer Evan Shamoon while IGF chairman Brandon Boyer watches disapprovingly, but I assure you it’s all in good fun.
Good times! See you next year Game Over show.

What a week! We were at GDC, Giant Robot’s Game Over 4 show and the SC3 arcade party in Alhambra — more on all that later — but there’s plenty to catch up on as it is. So, let’s catch up!
First and foremost, Focus, the documentary on pro Street Fighter player Mike Ross looks really really great. It’s exciting to see some great filmmaking happening around gaming, arcades and the people involved in this space.
The Last Guardian also continues to look really promising. Hopefully, it’ll be at E3 (and playable) this year.
What about the future of PC gaming? It may be done in a browser — and it may look amazing — believe it or not.
How can we get more pre-teen girls into hardcore gaming? The Elder Scrolls VI: Equestria may have the answer.
We couldn’t be more excited for Dark Souls if we tried, especially now that giant wolves (picture above) are in the game. This week, we learned about the “Beacon Fire” a “safe haven that offers players respite in the otherwise cold, dark and dangerous game world.” The Beacon Fire “embodies a number of key functions: healing and recovery point, restart check point, and a sharing point where other players on similar journeys can be seen as shadows.”
Finally, let’s remember Old Man Murray. We miss you, Marvin, even if we’re happy that Chet and Erik have found gainful employment at Valve.

Posted: 02/26/2011Let’s catch up on all the things that happened this week, starting with our first real look at The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Now, I may not have been an Oblivion player (I, on the other hand, beat Oblivion, Knights of the Nine, and Shivering Isles. -Scott), but my goodness does Skyrim look pretty amazing. 2011 may be the year of the RPG, with Bethesda’s game being joined by Mass Effect 3, Dark Souls, Dungeon Siege III and Skyrim this year. Maybe Diablo III should take its time…
If you need more analysis into that Skyrim debut trailer, don’t miss PC Gamer’s shot-by-shot breakdown.
Oh, one more RPG for the list. A little Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked, anyone?
You know, someone should make a video game based on the Kewpie Corporation’s kaiju playing cards. I don’t know how it would play, but it will have to involve mayonnaise in some capacity.
Finally, we couldn’t pass up a chance for a Meat Bun cameo. Mike Ross repped some Meat Bun on G4 this week, playing a little MVC3. Yuss!!

While it may not have been the best week for PlayStation 3 controllers–those jerks at Amusement had to go and smash the thing up with deadly discs from Tron–it was a mind-blowing week for video. Great trailers, even better trailers and stunning fan-made homages to classic gaming consoles. Let’s take a look shall we?
The one trailer everyone was talking about this week was that Dead Island re-announcement. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this much discussion about a video game trailer. It spilled well beyond video game sites and forums… I only hope the game lives up to that video.
One video that should’ve had more eyeballs was Aaron Nanto’s awesome Neo Geo tribute. So sexy (in a 16-bit way) it could easily be labeled video game porn.
And for the really obsessive, now’s the time to play Gran Turismo 5 on up to five TVs. Anyone have four spare PS3s and four extra HDTVs we can borrow?
This week, I think I might’ve found my main in Mortal Kombat. Noob Saibot!
Finally, while there’s sadly no video to accompany it, this is what Diablo III used to look like a long time ago, before a rainbow of fruit flavors was sprinkled all over it.
