  • This week’s Marvel Vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds Fight Club was, well, pretty huge. Our friends at iam8bit captured the whole thing on beautiful time-lapse footage, showing what 1,500 fighting game fans crammed into a club looks like. Dudes started lining at 1 AM the night before–and not on downtown LA’s cleanest alley, mind you–to get in, but the Fight Club offered a first glimpse at Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition and plenty of hands-on time with MVC3.

This looks like it might be the last Fight Club for a long, long time… at least until Street Fighter X Tekken comes closer to release. So savor it!

  • Come play Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds early with us this Thursday, February 3 at the latest Fight Club event thrown by the fine folks at Capcom USA. I Am 8-Bit is hosting the latest beat ‘em up get-together at Club 740 in downtown LA, where prize packs and early access to MVC3 can be had. Starts at 8 p.m., ends at 11 p.m.

No RSVP, just show up. But show up early if you want goodies and want to get in at a reasonable hour. Here’s where!

    Club 740
    740 South Broadway

    We’ll see you there?

  • Scenes From Game Night 4

    Posted: 01/23/2011

Last night, we co-hosted Game Night 4: The Revenge of Xmas with Attract Mode and Giant Robot at GR2, a party with candy canes, Christmas lights, hot cocoa, holiday chiptunes and the festive new George and Jonathan album, “The Best Christmas,” as well as Christmas-themed video games. Some of them were exclusive to Game Night 4, featuring special versions of Super Crate Box and 8BITar Hero.

And Daze Before Christmas, Sunsoft’s 16-bit Santa Claus game. Leave it to Carlos and the guys from Angry Bananas to have a copy of this lying around.

Here’s Arthur Lee, creator of 8BITar Hero, setting up. He’d picked a long list of snowy, icy levels from NES games like Contra, Super Mario Bros. 3, Mega Man 2, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and many more to play along with.

While we were setting up, we checked out the Meat Bun stuff over at the original Giant Robot store. If you’re looking for an out of print Miserable Little Pile of Secrets, you’ll have to go here.

Look! It’s Adam Robezzoli of Attract Mode fame playing some Super Street Fighter IV.

Super Crate Box was a huge hit, even if no one could manage to collect more than 17 crates in a row all night. Vlambeer created a special Xmas version of the game, complete with snow and Santa hats. So good!

    Here’s Mike, Mike Z and Daniel playing/admiring a little 8BITar Hero.

People really got into playing classic Tetris themes with Rock Band instruments.

If you find yourself on Sawtelle Ave and find yourself hungry, try the sushi burrito. Or don’t, because it sounds incredibly vile to eat sushi that’s been packed into a flour tortilla.

The “tornado potato,” on the other hand, is Mike Z approved. It’s a fried potato coiled around a savory sausage — a natural disaster of flavor, from what we hear.

  • New Year’s Eve has been stepping on Christmas’ toes for over two centuries. In 2011, Christmas is fighting back! Game Night 4: The Revenge of Xmas throws down at GR2 on January 22! Meat Bun, Attract Mode and Giant Robot will co-host the next Game Night waaaaay in advance of Christmas 2011 with a special night of holiday-themed video games.

    The line-up includes:
    - An X-mas edition of Vlambeer’s hit indie game Super Crate Box made exclusively for Game Night
    - Arthur Lee’s Merry Gear Solid games
    - A custom “holiday pack” edition of 8-BITar Hero, which mixes the Rock Band experience with old-school Nintendo games

Maybe there will be a few surprises too? Maybe! Hot cocoa and cookies will be served, but bring your own nog if you plan on having adult drinks. Please RSVP to the Facebook event page if you can come!

  • Pixel Pushers Recap

    Posted: 11/14/2010

Giant Robot’s Pixel Pushers exhibition kicked off in Culver City at the Scion installation space last night, showcasing the artistic talents of folks like Jude Buffum, Matt Furie, Shawn Smith, Nullsleep and more. The centerpiece was the Famicom-inspired Scion, designed by Eric Nakamura and fabricated by Len Higa.

Nakamura and crew displayed the “ideation” of the Famicom car, which had a projector built into the driver’s side headlight, a “key” in the form of an NES cart and NES pad-style buttons for door handles. Some junk in the trunk made it possible to play some Wii games in the back. It was awesome.

Look at that upholstery! Each passenger had their own customized NES pad so that anyone could play sidescrollin’ shoot ‘em up Return of the Quack on the big screen.

Mike and Scott did a little drinking and driving at the show. This is not recommended and certainly not how one plays Return of the Quack.

Kids loved Chevy Ray Johnston and Matt Furie’s Return of the Quack, slaying evil fudgesicles and mutant pizza slices all night long. Way past bedtime.

Photos don’t do Shawn Smith’s voxelated creations justice, so go to the Scion installation and see them in person.

Jude Buffum and Attract Mode‘s Adam Robezzoli must be laughing at their shared love of red flannel. Or maybe something else entirely.

Eric from Giant Robot poses thoughtfully with the Famicom car, while Mike Z. (obscured) plays a little Return of the Quack.

Hey! Martin from Giant Robot and Eloise (aka “Charlie Brown”) were there too!

Make sure to make the trip to the Scion Installation L.A. for Pixel Pushers, which runs until December 11. Gallery hours are Wednesday – Saturday, 11AM – 6PM.

See more photos from the event at the Meat Bun Facebook!

  • Our first Game Night with Giant Robot and Attract Mode was a blast, a gaming get together full of Super Meat Boy, The Typing of the Dead, Super Street Fighter IV, tasty pork buns and the occasional gothic lolita maid. We’re hoping to do it again real soon, if you didn’t have a chance to make it out. Fortunately, it was all captured on film by our friends at Angry Bananas.

Don’t let this terribly awkward video thumbnail turn you off… Check it!!

And speaking of Giant Robot, starting November 13, the Pixel Pushers exhibition hits the Scion art space in Culver City. Featured at the show will be the art, games and music of Matt Furie, Jude Buffum, Chevy Ray Johnston, Nullsleep and so much more.

The big draw will likely be the NES styled Scion xB designed by Eric Nakamura. We’ve seen pictures of the thing in action — you can sit in the driver’s seat and play Return of the Quack on it! — and it really shouldn’t be missed. The Pixel Pushers opening reception kicks off at 7pm on November 13, with the show running at the Scion Installation LA until December 11.
