Pixel Pushers Recap
Posted: 11/14/2010
Giant Robot’s Pixel Pushers exhibition kicked off in Culver City at the Scion installation space last night, showcasing the artistic talents of folks like Jude Buffum, Matt Furie, Shawn Smith, Nullsleep and more. The centerpiece was the Famicom-inspired Scion, designed by Eric Nakamura and fabricated by Len Higa.

Nakamura and crew displayed the “ideation” of the Famicom car, which had a projector built into the driver’s side headlight, a “key” in the form of an NES cart and NES pad-style buttons for door handles. Some junk in the trunk made it possible to play some Wii games in the back. It was awesome.

Look at that upholstery! Each passenger had their own customized NES pad so that anyone could play sidescrollin’ shoot ‘em up Return of the Quack on the big screen.

Mike and Scott did a little drinking and driving at the show. This is not recommended and certainly not how one plays Return of the Quack.

Kids loved Chevy Ray Johnston and Matt Furie’s Return of the Quack, slaying evil fudgesicles and mutant pizza slices all night long. Way past bedtime.

Photos don’t do Shawn Smith’s voxelated creations justice, so go to the Scion installation and see them in person.

Jude Buffum and Attract Mode‘s Adam Robezzoli must be laughing at their shared love of red flannel. Or maybe something else entirely.

Eric from Giant Robot poses thoughtfully with the Famicom car, while Mike Z. (obscured) plays a little Return of the Quack.

Hey! Martin from Giant Robot and Eloise (aka “Charlie Brown”) were there too!
Make sure to make the trip to the Scion Installation L.A. for Pixel Pushers, which runs until December 11. Gallery hours are Wednesday – Saturday, 11AM – 6PM.

From Game Night To Pixel Pushers
Posted: 11/07/2010
Our first Game Night with Giant Robot and Attract Mode was a blast, a gaming get together full of Super Meat Boy, The Typing of the Dead, Super Street Fighter IV, tasty pork buns and the occasional gothic lolita maid. We’re hoping to do it again real soon, if you didn’t have a chance to make it out. Fortunately, it was all captured on film by our friends at Angry Bananas.
Don’t let this terribly awkward video thumbnail turn you off… Check it!!
And speaking of Giant Robot, starting November 13, the Pixel Pushers exhibition hits the Scion art space in Culver City. Featured at the show will be the art, games and music of Matt Furie, Jude Buffum, Chevy Ray Johnston, Nullsleep and so much more.
The big draw will likely be the NES styled Scion xB designed by Eric Nakamura. We’ve seen pictures of the thing in action — you can sit in the driver’s seat and play Return of the Quack on it! — and it really shouldn’t be missed. The Pixel Pushers opening reception kicks off at 7pm on November 13, with the show running at the Scion Installation LA until December 11.

How to The Room
Posted: 09/11/2010A sublime cosmic convergence took place on October 3, 1963 — it was the day Tommy Wiseau was born. An equally spectacular event occurred June 27, 2003 — Tommy Wiseau released his critically acclaimed movie masterpiece, The Room. September 3, 2010 will now join these glorious dates, and go down in history as the day The Room: The Game first graced the Internet.
If you find yourself confused by any of the above proclamations, fret not — Meat Bun is here to help! First, we’ll need to get you up to speed. To do that, let’s enjoy a sampling of Tommy Wiseau in action.
You may need to watch the above clip a dozen or so times to begin to absorb it’s artistry. Don’t worry about the context or plot. There is none. Focus more on the character Johnny’s unique enunciation and delivery. And you may ask yourself, why has everything been over-dubbed?! While we ponder that question, bask in the surreal glow of a San Fransisco skyline only achieved through gratuitous use of completely unnecessary green-screening.
Now that you are a fan, you will want to attend a screening for yourself. Luckily, The Room will be showing (in perpetuity) at a theater near you. If not, move. The last time we went we were joined by the adoring cast of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and we shit you not, Tommy Wiseau himself! Arrive early and buy your tickets in advance — all five midnight screenings sold out when we attended. The only mandatory item to bring to the theater are as many plastic spoons as you can physically stuff in to your pockets. Trust us, you’ll be glad you did.

The Room: The Game will allow you to keep your The Room: The Movie after-glow going strong. In the game you can guide protagonist/hero, Johnny, around lush 16-bit environments and fully explore his world. You will throw a football in a tux, make sweet love to Lisa, even find out what really happened to Peter (who inexplicably disappears about half way through the film).
If you are in the Los Angeles area, join us on September 25th as we make another pilgrimage to the Laemmle Sunset 5. We hope to see you there! SPOON!

Bustin’ Makes Me Feel Good
Posted: 09/04/2010
Last night’s opening reception of the 3G Show — fine art inspired by Ghostbusters, Gremlins and The Goonies — was packed with lowbrow art lovers. Great pieces from German Orozco, Drake Brodahl, Craig Parrillo and Jude Buffum were the main draw, but the sidewalk outside Gallery 1988 was overflowing thanks to the DeLorean time machine parked outside right behind this thing.

Yes, the Ecto-1 showed up and in perfect working order. Seats for four Ghostbusters, working sirens, room for proton packs in the back and a copy of Tobin’s Spirit Guide on the dashboard. Awesome.
Also, this guy showed up.

Choose Your Own Adventure: PAX 2010 & The 3G Show
Posted: 09/03/2010
If you’re going to PAX Prime this weekend in lovely Seattle, Washington, after you’ve gotten your share of blowjobs in Duke Nukem Forever, make sure to cruise by the 2 Player Productions booth. Our friends at Attract Mode have been gracious enough to haul a bunch of fresh Meat Bun stuff up to the show and will be holding down the booth all weekend.
Stop by, say “Hi!” to Adam and Matt, grab one of Cory Lewis‘ limited edition prints and score some Meat Bun gear!
Not going to PAX? If you’re in LA, don’t miss The 3G Show, opening tonight at Gallery 1988. The show will feature artwork from Autumn Society artists based on the three big Gs — Ghostbusters, Gremlins and The Goonies. That includes one of three brilliant, video game-inspired pieces by Jude Buffum, like this stellar 8-bit Gremlins scene from Dorry’s Tavern.

The 3G Show’s opening reception starts Friday, September 3rd 2010 at 7 pm at Gallery 1988. See you there!

Life in LIMBO
Posted: 07/19/2010In Catholic theology, the term limbo refers to the edge of hell, just outside of zipcode 666 — “hell adjacent” as it were. In the gaming world, this bleak monochromatic masterpiece is nothing short of double rainbow OMG!

There are no health meters and no dialog to go along with the no colors. What you get instead is a truly scary, often times violent place to explore… as a young boy. If you found that scene where Frodo is being cocooned by a giant spider a little disturbing, prepare to live the experience.

LIMBO rewards the nimble and quick thinking. There is a lot of dying, brutally, but the game never punishes you. You will be quickly giving it another go, only to realize your timing is still off, and that buzz saws and bear traps and little boys rarely mix well. This may be the best game you play all year.
